Spectrum staff Spectrum newspaper has received two National Mature Media Awards, the sponsors of the program announced last week. "Golfer Captures Spirit of Senior Games," a profile of local athlete Bob Dutra by staff writer Daniel Dullum, received a silver award in the category for magazine or newspaper articles. The story described how Dutra, a participant in the Sacramento Senior Games, continued golfing with a one-armed swing after a stroke limited the use of his left arm. Spectrum's Sacramento Golden Pages 2001 received a bronze award in the "miscellaneous publication" category -- the top award presented in the category this year. Golden Pages, updated every January, is a resource directory which includes phone numbers, addresses and Web site information for senior-related groups and services in the area. More than 1,100 entries were submitted for the 11th annual contest, many from large national publications including Parade Magazine, AARP Modern Maturity, My Generation and New Choices Magazine. Along with categories for news publications, the awards program included divisions for ad agencies, government entities and other organizations which prepare news, advertisements, educational materials and marketing campaigns geared toward seniors. Entries were judged on overall excellence of design, content, creativity and relevance to the over-50 market, said Patricia Henze, executive director of the Mature Market Resource Center, which presented the awards. The panel of judges included public relations experts, advertising executives, journalists and members of government agencies which focus on aging. Judges scored the entries by division and category on a scale of one to 100, and each entry was judged on its own merits, regardless of how many other entries were in the same category. Gold, silver, bronze and merit awards were issued based on the scores. The judges "were impressed with the overall high quality and creative ideas of all the works they viewed," Henze said. Spectrum was the only media winner from the Sacramento area. In the category for direct-mail advertising for housing, Sacramento-based Hank Fisher Properties won a silver award for its "Luncheon Postcard to Seniors and Adult Children."
