Sacramento
Archive Begins ‘Faces & Places’ History Project
By
Stephen Baetge
History
isn’t something only found in textbooks. History is, more likely, sitting
in people’s shoeboxes, bags and trunks, according to the Sacramento Archives
and Museum Collection Center (SAMCC).
SAMCC is initiating a countywide historical photo collection. Their Faces & Places
of Sacramento project seeks to document the daily lives and historical, political
and cultural life of the Sacramento region.
SAMCC’s mission is to collect and preserve photographs of Sacramento and
its surrounding communities. A professional photographer will record the snapshots.
SAMCC will archive the copies, and participants will keep their original photos..
“The photos collected will enhance SAMCC’s current photographic archive,” said
SAMCC manager Marcia Eymann. “Carefully preserving all photos in the collection
assures that they will be available for present and future generations. And participants
will be preserving their family’s contribution to Sacramento’s rich
history.”
Faces & Places of Sacramento is supported by Sacramento’s mayor and
city council members. Collection, photography and preservation of photos will
be done one district at a time. The kick-off event for this project is in Councilman
Kevin McCarty’s District 6 on Saturday, June 30.
“We’re asking residents of that district to bring photos of the distant
and not-so-distant history of Sacramento to the auditorium of the Coloma Community
Center at 4623 T Street on Saturday, June 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” Eymann
said.
“We’re looking for photos that document family life, people at work,
transportation, communication, community gatherings, social and political gatherings … the
collection is really about who we are in our everyday lives,” Eymann added.
Dates for gathering photos from the other districts are being set for the coming
months.
For the June 30 event, interested residents of District 6 may call 916-264-7073
for more information and to set an appointment for the review and copying of
their photographs.
SAMCC is regularly accessed by researchers, writers, students, historians, genealogists
and others. The archive is public, but research is conducted by appointment only.
