State Commission on Aging Hires New Director

Spectrum staff writer

Sandra Fitzpatrick, the executive director of the Area 1 Agency on Aging in Humboldt County, has been named executive director of the California Commission on Aging, the commission announced Thursday.

Fitzpatrick succeeds Ray Mastalish, who announced in June that he would resign this month to take a job closer to his home in Palm Springs.

Fitzpatrick has been executive director of the Area 1 Agency on Aging for the past five years, and previously served for 12 years as the agency’s deputy director.

“During her tenure with the Area Agency, she demonstrated innovation of financing utilizing varieties of public and private funds, launching creative programs and stimulating planning efforts for the aging baby boomers,” said Nancy Dolton, chair of the Commission on Aging.

The new executive director holds a master’s degree in organizational communication and has taught at Humboldt State University. She also has worked as a consultant in evaluating community-based senior services.

“Her practical local-level experience will be relevant to the commission as we continue our advocacy to improve aging and long-term care services in California,” Dolton said.

The Commission on Aging is comprised of 25 unpaid appointees of the governor and Legislature who advocate for seniors and advise state policy-makers. The commission also has administrative responsibility for the Triple A Council of California and the California Senior Legislature.

The executive director is a full-time salaried employee who manages day-to-day operations of the commission, oversees its communications efforts and plans its regular meetings.
