Democratic state legislators hold a press conference March 4 at the California Veterans Memorial near the Capitol to announce opposition to military action in Iraq "without a formal resolution by the United Nations Security Council and a declaration of war by Congress." The lawmakers sent a letter to President Bush, signed by 52 Democrats in the state Senate and Assembly, claiming a "lack of credible evidence that meets the standard of 'beyond a reasonable doubt' that shows the imminent danger Iraq poses to America's essential interests." Sen. Deborah Ortiz was the only Sacramento area representative to sign the letter. On the other side of the issue, 41 Republican lawmakers signed a letter to Bush saying they "stand in general agreement with the fundamental process, integrity and patience with which you have pursued peace and safety for the American people." The letter expressing support for Bush and the American troops was signed by local Sens. Tim Leslie, San Aanestad and Rico Oller, and by Assembly Republican Leader Dave Cox and Assemblyman Alan Nakanishi.
