Mike Smith, 59, the former lead singer and keyboardist for The Dave Clark Five, underwent surgery at a Cadiz, Spain, hospital Sept. 22 to repair three broken vertebrae in his neck, his U.S. booking agency reported.

Talent Consultants International, based in New York, released a statement saying Smith’s doctors called the surgery successful.

Smith, who was featured in the Sept. 9 issue of Spectrum, is resting comfortably at a private hospital that specializes in sports injuries, the report said.

Smith performed with his band Rock Engine at The Radisson’s Grove in Sacramento on Aug. 31, the final date of a U.S. tour which marked Smith’s return to performing. He was injured Sept. 13 in a fall at his home in the Costa del Sol region of Spain and initially was listed in critical condition.

No other information on Smith’s condition was available at press time.
