Herman Boone, the retired high school football coach whose story inspired the motion picture "Remember the Titans," is the keynote speaker for the Healthy Aging 2003 Northern California Regional Summit on Oct. 18 at Cal Expo.

The summit, which is free and open to the public, starts with a one-mile healthy aging walk led by 80-year-old marathoner Helen Klein of Rancho Cordova. Sign-in for the walk is 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., and the walk is 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

At 9 a.m., Boone will speak on the topic of "Building a Strong Community Based on the Strength of Diversity."

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the summit will feature health checks, workshops and entertainment.

CHW/Mercy Hospitals, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health and UC Davis Health System are scheduled to present workshops dealing with heart health, tips for healthy aging, falls, menopause, changes for life healing, taking responsibility for one’s health, diabetes and healthy eating.

Throughout the summit, free health checks will be available for breast cancer, skin cancer, cholesterol, bone density, diabetes, blood pressure, stroke, weight and body fat, dental health, vision, hearing, memory loss, depression, respiratory illnesses and more.

Complimentary tai chi, yoga, massage, and herbal therapies also will be available.

A special feature of Healthy Aging 2003 is a multicultural museum, which includes family art exhibits.

One of the exposition complex buildings will be devoted to health presentations for summit participants of Latino or Asian descent.

Interpreters, transportation and parking are available.
